There was a time when community colleges' open-door policy extended right up until the last day of registration. Procrastinating students might not get their first choice of classes, but they would still be able to get in.

Some of the 394 Broward teachers let go one week ago will soon find out that their layoffs were short-lived. Broward school district officials will know how many teachers they can offer jobs to -- for now -- by early Wednesday. Teachers will get word by certified mail and district e-mail, likely by Thursday.
Early into a new six-year contract, Florida Atlantic University president Frank Brogan may leave to take a new state job. Brogan, whose contract with FAU expires in 2015, is considering applying to become chancellor of the state university system, said Nancy Blosser, chairwoman of the FAU Board of Trustees. He would oversee matters affecting all 11 public universities.
